Reconstructing somali history through migrations

I've been wondering about how you could reconstruct somali history using oral sources. Then it occurred to me that a lot of clans have moved due to war or famine to different parts of the country. They're they join other clans and people have these migrations passed down as oral stories. You could combine this with enivormental history to track exactly what time they moved and the potential climatic causes and sort of reconstruct a more solid outline for porably the last 500-600 years of somali history with some understanding of the politics of the tine.
