islamist politics generally wasn't as ubiquitous in the muslim world back then as it is today, people forget that ataturk was a model statesman for much of the ruling muslim elite at the time. shift occurred around the 1970s. MSB himself was of the same ilk as the pre kacaan somali elite when it came to practicing/enforcing the faith. secularism was totally normal back then.

but that's a bygone era, so there's no point to this discourse at all. you're talking to a wall

While i agree secularism was more widely accepted at the time, The kacaan struck a unique balance between modernism and Islamic principles. Its crackdown on Christian missionaries shows its dedication to faith, compared to the previous administration. Comparing him to the pre-Kacaan elite is not accurate, as the thread show substantial differences between the two.

Siad Barre had his authorities rape and beat Somalis affiliated with non-violent, religious fundamentalists. They were forced naked while in prison. One of the first Somali refugees in Canada pre-civil war were such people and students. People don't know this. This was the reality in the mid 1980s. There's so much of Somalia's recent history that has not been documented, or only barely.
