Mohamud Hassan, 24, was arrested in his Cardiff home on Friday 8th January under the most violent of circumstances. 20 South Wales police officers removed all occupants from the residence leaving Mohamud alone. During this time Mohamud was severely beaten and abused. He was then forcibly taken to Cardiff Bay Police station.
He told family members that he was tasered twice and through images they could see bite marks all over his body. Additionally, he stated that he was brutally kicked in the head and suffered injuries to his face and knee- it was dislocated, and he struggled to walk. Witnesses say that he was covered in blood with significant injuries to his mouth.
He received no medical care.
Mohamud was released at approximately 11am the following day without charge. Too tired to seek medical attention, he returned home to rest at approximately 5pm. Later that evening he was found in his bed unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene however the official cause of death is currently unknown.
We are attempting to raise money for funeral arrangements and legal fees. A case has been opened however to ensure justice we are also looking into opening a private case of our own.
The family are devastated by the loss of their eldest son and will not allow Mohamud to become another statistic. Black men cannot continue to be treated as second class citizens by police. His death was avoidable as were so many others. Mohamud was not the first victim of police brutality but we will try and make sure that he is the last.
