I feel like with the whole of subsaharan africa (maybe it's a black thing who knows) I would chalk up the problems into three things: laziness, selfishness and a case of the prisoners' dilemma. if I went into the whole thing, id probably end up writing an esay, but instead I'll just say, look around you even in first world countries, the conditions of african neighborhoods and restuarants; anyone in minnesota whos been to the biggest somali mall there (karmel) can tell you the trashy conditions of it.
we just don't seem to have a drive for excellence in everything, or ambition for the future, or next generations or collective community interest, rather it just seems to day to day living, everyone concerned about their own stomach and clan/kin. And of course they would be, but that is why i brought up the prisoners' dilemma. because if everyone forgoes their collective duty in their own interest, then the outcome for society as a whole will be a negative one.
and wallahi the xin is somalia is so bad no one can get past the civil war because no one wants to let another rival clan or person get past them in anything. The stories that I've heard recently from relative there almost make me lose hope for the somali nation. We need a serious mental revolution there asap
Neocolonialism. African agricultural products are blocked from being sold in the West (primarily Europe) because of legislation or massive tariffs are slapped on it. Heavy brain drain, majority of the top 1% intelligent elite of Africa leave the continent. If you go against Western hegemony like Gaddafi did expect to be toppled or made dirt poor like Mugabe.
General economic structure, too dependent on commodity exports and not on internal consumer / services markets.
Tribalism / collectivist mentality.
Corruption culture. If you have a successful company in Africa, expect local authorities to extract your ass for protection money like the mafia.
