This thread is informative and goes into detail, this doesn’t even include the stuff going on nowadays. He literally leased 2 lslands to UAE for $800m. This story has so many nuances and I think a documentary is the only thing that can truly tell it in a broader sense. I made an in depth post a While back on it. One of the islands (koyama) has a population of approximately 500 and the people pleaded for a water well and cell tower for YEARS ever since Al Shabab left and this is how they were compensated.
