government official openly shows sympathy with an armed Eritrea/n separatist opposition group like RSADO. Since 1998 the RSADO militia has a camp in northern Ethiopia. This statement of Minister of irrigation Berhanu M. should be condemned.Ethiopia must respect Eritreaโs territorial integrity and Ethiopia should abide the Ethiopian Eritrean peace agreement signed in 2018, which includes to end hosting armed proxy groups. Till 1998 RSADO was hosted by Ethiopia. Even after the 2018 peace agreement, RSADO hasnโt left the Afar region of Ethiopia.
Any attempt to support RSADO against Eritrea , will only bring conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Using the Afar card to destabilize Eritrea or Djibouti will make things more complicated for Ethiopia. Nether do Eritrean or Djibouti Afars want to join Ethiopia. The General of the Eritrean navy is Afar. Most Eritrean Afars voted for Eritreaโs independence. Many Eritrean Afars fought in the Eritrean independence struggle for the ELF and EPLF against Ethiopia. Even in the conflict in northern Ethiopia, the Eritrean Afars of the Eritrean army led by the Eritrean general Hummad Karrikare who is Eritrean Afar led the operation to free the Afar region of Ethiopia from the Tigrayan invaders in 2021-2022.
During the conflict in Northern Ethiopia, the Tigrayan Peopleโs Liberation Front TPLF invaded the Afar region and engaged in extrajudicial killings and raping of thousands of Afars, burning of afar villages, destruction of hospitals, the Eritrean Afar refugee camp in the afar region and the burning of the Mesjid in Afar by the tplf. TPLF had plans to create an independent country called Greater Tigray/Abbay Tigray which includes land of the Eritrean highlands, the Afar region of Ethiopia and the Eritrean Assab region.
Ethiopia must learn to respect the territorial integrity of its neighbors.
