The majority of Somalis living here were working directly or indirectly in the oil industry and all the work has dried up and most have been laid off because of low oil prices. I only know of a few Somalis who are still working
There has already been 2 suicides in the Somali community because of this downturn.
It has created an unfortunate situation. Many Somalis have started to get evictions or have already been kicked out of their homes. The banks have been taking their cars back from those who failed to pay.
Many have went back to Ontario but the recent Somalis have stayed here because Alberta is the only place they know. The recent Somalis are the real victims in this situation. They are young and have wives and children. New to the country with no skills.
I am aware of a few recent Somali families who are now in shelters because of this situation.
This is going to get ugly.
It will get worse by the Spring when unemployment insurance runs out for the majority of Somalis (its already run out for the minority at the moment)
Let's have them in our thoughts. Thousands of Somalis are hurting in this city
