Ethiopia is basically that.

We confuse historical and modern ethiopia.
The pre menelik ethiopia was a kingdom of Habasha. A orthodox Christian state that had Amhara & Tigrayan ruling class that fought and a bunch of other ethio semetic tribes that lived there. A feudal society in the mountains.

After menelik ethiopia was a multi ethnic state struggling to keep itself together. Constantly rotating between ethnic based leadership who opressed everyone else. This version of Ethiopia is whoever rules it.

Before with Halie Ethiopia = Amhara. With TPLF and figures like Meles Ethiopia = Tigrayans. Now with PP and Abiy Ethiopia = Oromo.

Eventually something will push the state to its limits and ethiopia will fall into ethnic based violanve before nation states are formed. Ethiopia is an empire pretending to be a Nation.

It even says in its constitution that ethiopia is a Naiton of nations.
