As of now, Afwerki is fighting a proxy war with Abiy by arming and training Fano. While they make slow and steady gains, it keeps the Ethiopian threat at arms length. Realistically, Abiy has just been trying to rile up the Amhara support base that he relied on to ascend to power but it’s proven to be futile.

Afwerki is a Machiavellian psychopath, but war is where he thrives. His acumen for geopolitical diplomacy is unmatched in Africa. He has friends where it matters (Russia, China, Saudi and now Egypt). These are people with a vested interest in his survival. He’s outlasted all his opponents. I don’t see how Abiy even matches to the likes of Meles, Mengistu etc.

He was allies with Iran but has since shifted towards the Saudi axis. The naval base rumors were complete bunk. That’s something you want to be known publicly as a deterrent.
