My uncle recently brought this fruit/ berry back from his travels in somalia. My fam told me that its called hohob. Anyone know what kind of berry/ fruit it is? it's benefits? Why can't I find anything online about it?

You' re reviving old memories :hillarybiz:

Hohob or Ohob (Grewia Penicillata, if you want the english name) are tiny sweet red berries that grow out from the bush we somalis call Gonbeshe or Toon-dhiidhi. It grows only on altitudes beyond 150m if I recall correctly, so that means it doesn' t grow out in certain areas of southern somalia and NFD.
The bush usually doesn' t get any taller that 2-2.5m range.

As for the berries, they are eaten raw or you can eat them with caano geel oo dhay ah. Try it with dhanaan and you' ll regret it eternally.

Edit:
In the post above Burqad shares Grewia asiatica. Although related it isn' t Grewia Penicillata.

Oh I love hohob, yicib, dhanfaruur, xamur, and many others I do not quite recall. I remember eating them all when I first visited the countryside.

I agree eating hobhob with fresh milk is the best.

Beware to chew it well, and not to swallow, for if you do, then constipation reins :)

do you eat the hohob and then drink milk with each hohob? or do you take some hohob and mix it in milk, then strain it? how do you drink it with milk in order to get the most flavor of both the hohob and milk?

Just like 'timir', I would place half a handful in my mouth, chew on one side, and sip the milk (caana geel oo daray ah from gaawe la culay).

The other one, I liked was 'miracas', which is rather sweet, and covered in honey-like dots, when very ripe.

My mom once mentioned eating it as a kid. Didn't know it looked like that. She also ate some fruit (pink or red) that grew on cactus. And another fruit that grows on short bushes, looked kind of like a lemon.
