Arab Muslims arrived at the end of the 15th century around the time when the Spanish Inquisition first began, they were most likely fleeing from oppression.

They couldnโ€™t bring any of their high class institutions over here?

Iโ€™m pretty sure places like Jamia (which literally means University) Mosque or Arba'a Rukun Mosque in Mogadishu were academies/places of education and doubled as a masjid. The former of which was founded in the 13th century. The location these Arab migrants went to was Benadir which was known for its scholars and pious muslims, especially Mogadishu which was called Dar es Salaam by some back then.
