It was a Black day in which Mengistu Haile Mariam troops along with the rebel group SNM, working under his regime launched a full scale genocidal campaign against the Gadabursi people right after the former regime of Somalia collapsed in January 1991.
People numbering in the thousands indiscriminately massacred, children, women, mothers, civilians, buildings and schools and homes shelled. children ran over by armored vehicles acquired from the Mengistu regime and the whole towns pillaged, looted and leveled to the ground.
African Review, 1992 and Country Report on Human Rights Practices 1992 mention a combined Ethiopian-SNM attack on the towns and almost 100 thousand fleeing inside the borders of Ethiopia.
