Camel meat

Is camel meat good? My dad said it was very good for you and it has very little fat.

A Halal market opened recently in my city that sells camel milk, so I plan to try it soon, any tips? How does it taste?

Camel meat is hard and chewy, Camel milk is sweet and frothy.

Are camels not consumed in Oromia?

Bro I highly advise u to stick to eating lamb cuz even nomadic pastoralist Somalis rarely very rarely eat camel meat since it's very chewy...usually nomadic Somalis just eat lamb or they go weeks without eating meat at all (they survive mainly on camel milk, sorghum and some endemic fruits and nuts)

It has a gamey taste. It's kinda like lamb meat/mutton if you have ever tried it.

Not true. Pastoralists actually commonly ate camel meat, they would butcher them at the end of their life cycle and preserve the meat in butter.

They would also eat more meat during the dry season when milk was scarce

Whereas sedentary and towns people ate camel meat more regularly cause they could afford to, instead of preserving of their milk and butter.
we rarely ate camel meat I remember we would eat it like a few times a year, while every month my uncles family would slaughter a sheep goat or lamb ...as I said, even in olden times nomadic Somalis very rarely ate camel meat, like you said the fact they only ate it whenever the animal was nearing the end of its cycle alone shows they rarely ate this type of meat

They don't eat camels while they are growing alive, because they use them for transport, milk and butter but they butcher and eat them at the end of their life cycle. It's not because camel meat is chevy or whatever and they prefer lamb.

They would also eat more camel meat during the dry season when milk was scarce like i said. Where they live off mainly their meat instead of milk

Camel milk is even better, be careful or you might get addicted, same goes for the hump fat aswell.

This explains why I'm so clear-headed when I only consume fat or protein, I lost like 20KG in 2 months while I was back home.

The reason they don’t eat much camel meat is not because they don’t like but it’s because it’s very expensive. Camels take time to grow and some nomads would rather let it die than slaughter it. Somalis don’t ride their camels like Arabs as the animal is beloved to them. Every somali nomad has a camel tied to their birth that’s how beloved camels are in somali culture.

in cities like hargeysa lascanood jigjiga dhagaxbuur muqdisho camel meat is consumed heavily but the nomads don’t consume as much as they need the camel to survive the nomadic lifestyle.

Yes, most Somalis in Somaliland and Ethiopian Somalis eat camel meat because it is cheaper and more abundant One camel is enough for maybe ten people

I grew up on the stuff. I didn't actually know for much of my life. One day I'm with my mother and ask her what camel meat tastes like and she says "You tell me." and when I'm like "??" she points out that I've been eating it much of the time with lunch and sometimes with dinner since I was a kid. What I kept assuming was beef was camel. It doesn't taste like beef, though. I can't really describe it but it's different but also great and there are plenty of bony, fatty and gelatinous camel meat cuts.

My favorite growing up, which I did know was camel meat, was camel liver. Mother would make it with green bell peppers and onions and when I got older introduced me to "kurus" which is the camel's hump fat which Somalis would cook the camel liver with without letting the fat melt too much into tallow. Simply sublime stuff. Bar none my favorite liver among all ruminants. Always has this delicious residue at the bottom of the bowl I'd just lap up like delicious milk once I was done with the solids.

Thats interesting because I've read that Somali nomads tend to eat the hump of the camel ,they call it ''ammaan " , which means praise. The used to even eat it raw

The only meat eaten raw by nomad connoisseurs is the blood- less fat in a camel's hump ( amaan ) ;

Camel hump fat
, however , when cooked , is still consumed with hot bowls of soup and heaps of flat injera bread .

I'm aware. Camel hump fat is called "Kurus" or at least that's one of its names which is a play on the word "Kursi" for chair. I know they used to eat it raw as well and can't blame them. Animal fat in general is sublime but I gotta tell ya that it's a whole other ballgame when you cook this stuff a bit with liver.

What about donkey meat I hear abgaal have a lot of donkeys. Do you guys eat it?
Our excessive usage of donkey’s is because we live in carow madoow ( black soil like terrain) and donkeys are very good at transporting things in dhiiqo. Other clans that live in green muddy areas like the Digil in lower Shabelle use donkeys a lot as well. It just got attached to us because when somaliweyne moved to the capital, they were confused as to why local abgaal reer baadiyos used donkeys so much

Camels aren't eaten as much in the part where my families from. Camels are present more in the drier areas, like deep in southern oromia and parts of the east. (and of course, afar and somali areas).

Must introduce Geel to those cadaans
Maybe they will get our Qoor dheer

Oh camel milk is delicious. I feast on nothing, but it, when travelling thought ardu Somal, and it is tender, healthier, and lovely, with a caveat: the chef must know how to cook it. Sanaag is a nice restaurant in S Minneapolis, which serves delicious camel meat on its menu. There is another in the Global market on Lake St, not as good though in my mind.

Has any of you tried venison (deer or bison)? It tastes somewhat the same.

Postscript:
In the past, camel meat used to come to the US from Australia, but now there are a couple of camel herders in the Portland areas.
