Can anyone name the qabiils and names of the Junta that made the coup of 1969?

MSB had one advantage: his opponents underestimated him because he looked dumb. Whenever he sought collaboration with someone, they use to start with ' Ma adoo afweyne ah baa rabtaa inaa kula shaqeeyo ...?'

Afweyne used this to his advantage.

also marehan were considered langaabs and historically were insignificant as they did not fight the white men like nor made deals with the white invaders so his marehaness was considered another handicap

The 25 member committee known as the "golaha sare" or SRC, were members of the Army, Police and Airforce that were selectively picked in a secret meeting between Siyaad, Salaad, Caynaanshe, Samatar and few others, after a bit of double dealing and eliminating personal rivals.

For example, Xuseen Kulmiye was an Aide de Camp to PM Cigaal and was most certainly not involved in the coup, Salaad Gabeyre wanted Caydiid in his place instead. Siyaad and the others voted against that and Xuseen Kulmiye was picked - they knew that 2 Waceysles in the SRC would create intra-Abgaal rivalry, playing on Salaads power-hungry insecurities.

Siyaad eventually got his way with most of the 25 men being either his clansmen or personal friends, he knew they would vouch for him in many important votes in the future.

Those 25 men were not necessarily the coup initiators. Infact some civilians like Xasan Abshir had a bigger role in the coup than some of them.

Would you consider the coup members as the fathers of destruction to the young Republic

Actually many of those 25, were good men that were sincere in working towards Somali unity. Cusmaan Jeelle and Muuse Rabiille for example, were well loved for their contribution to Mogadishu and the Somali Sports Association.

At some point in the 70s, a law was passed that gave Siyaad personal decree, meaning he could bypass any of their votes. That was the turning point - it made those men pretty redundant, they were just there for show because death sentences and imprisonment skyrocketed, the NSS grew massively in size that created an atmosphere of fear in the country.

The country fucked up in the 80s when it became a family-run business.

Read Teeri's posts from somnet about us saxib don't be surprised

Don't know what that other user is on about. Marehan representation in the Adal Wars along with Harti, Isaaq and Geri is well recorded.

Didn't that family business precede the 80s? In the early 70s, farms that were former Italian plantations in the south were "nationalized" and the rights of exporting the produce were given to a select few

There was nepotism from day 1. But i am talking about the obvious nepotism that everyone could see. Nobody knew much about the nationalised farms or who inherited them or the massive development schemes like the Mareerey Project.

By the mid 80s, his sons, cousins and in laws were all managing the security apparatus of the country. The NSS, police, Army, Airforce. Only the Navy was safe from his corruption because it didnt serve much purpose.

The only concession he gave was most of the money in the country to a Murursade Politician Maxamed Sh Cusmaan the Finance Minister, to basically keep the Hawiye quiet. He gave nothing to the Isaaq and MJ's, but he reconciled with the MJs during the wars against the SNM.

Siad Barre was very intelligent. He spoke fluent English and Italian, in addition to other languages. Despite coming from a nomad family with no urban background, he rose to the top in Somalia's dog-eat-dog world and pushed aside privileged brats like Egal. Everyone who came across Siad marveled at his wit, take for example the U.S ambassador to Somalia in the 1970s who telegrammed the following back to Washington:

"[Siad Barre] is one of the most compelling figures I have encountered in 15 years of African experience. Articulate, vigorous, indomitable in both debate and activity, he is an outstanding interlocutor.”

Of course Siad became leader of the coup. How could a brilliant man, who spoke Somali in the most perfect accent, who came from a noble clan, not outwit and outshine abgaal dameers like Salaad Gabeyre, or clueless MJs who think they are far more clever than they actually are?
