Can Puntland Pull Off The Singapore Economic Story

Hey the @Thegoodshepherd can Puntland who has some striking similarities to Singapore past being an improvished trade hub surrounded by a bad region, could we take some ideas from it.

Some of the great talking points I noted for successful economy is;

1. Good governance I heard Deni has the will to remove corruption
2. Ease of doing Business, not to many laws because this means penalties
3. A govt focussed on infrastructure, health, education as its main priorities
4. A Housing policy. I noted this a while ago, govt should take the land and prepare it with electricity, water, roads and ask developers to build and control the sale price to only include the building cost and 20% profit margin. Once the locals are Employed they will need to purchase properties.
5. A public health fund that everyone needs to contribute too so access to health is universal
6. A sovereign Puntland fund in the international stock exchange which has to be linked to high growth assets so it grows over time and can be pulled out when needing to do public services
7. Finally I reiterate this is the most important or second, a national wage council, each industry has to have legally set salaries if this is left to the free market it could recreate a congo worker base salary and this will effect the whole economy.
8. A private local stock market where civilians can openly buy shares of PL companies and help the company expand or grow while civilian money grows.

Please note, None of these reforms is possible if the economy remains informal and isn't formalized for record keeping.

The @Thegoodshepherd I'm studying the Botswana miracle who didn't turn into a congo with its diamond, since PL will also have a future oil and currently does gold mining as sectors, theirs lessons to be learned.

You never fail to amaze me with your delusions of grandeur. Someone needs to archive and pile up all of these outrageous threads of yours.

:wow1:

Senior Ministers need to be paid well to deter corruption and scout out the best talent, that's what Lee Kuan Yew did.

I believe in our people wallahi. As long as we have peace, not divided and corruption is low.

We need to set up wage council for all industries, this makes work attractive to locals if they know the pay will give them good living standard but it also fends off companies who want their revenues to go only to business owners or foreign companies benefit. If you don't establish this attitude we don't get pimped out in Puntland for pennies you will turn into a congo land rich but people poor.

This can happen, but Unfortunately like you said, the economy is way too informal. No offence but if your focus is on fishing and farming you’re pretty capped.

You guys need to urbanise though, it doesn’t have to be Bosaso/garowe but spread it out. Create a centre for construction, education, banking, technology, medicine keep the economy internal.

Singapore is an independent country.
So are you saying we need to settle PL status and achieve political stability, I agree. PL in my opinion rushed federation and should've started as a confederation like the E.U, maybe in a century or two they can review if federation is suitable and conducting every 25 years or once in a generation federal reviews to show it's commitment to achieving a federal republic, but coming out of civil war and str8 to federalism was to optimistic. We needed to transition to a federation but not start as one.

You must agree after a certain time period it's pointless seeking a united country while that country is dysfunctional and achieving no goals as the years just leave us behind, sometimes it's more practical to take your slice of the nation cake 🍰 and turn that into a larger cake πŸŽ‚. Point in example look at the emirates their lucky if their 100k population yet their controlling much larger countries, they didn't sit there hoping for a khaleeji union and dysfunction. Let's not kid ourselves, the longest running civil war and failed state Somalia will be given exceptions by international community on whatever system they choose. It's not the international community that is the problem, they will sign off on any system that will bring this part of the world stability, it's our stupid politicians competing on petty matters while time continues to evade us and nothing gets done but a stalemate.

I think that Singapore was already far ahead of where Puntland is today when they gained independence from Britain. They already had British common law, a population educated in English, and a great strategic location.

Puntland does not have any of those things. We need to build an efficient judicial system, raise standards of education and work on building road and port infrastructure to facilitate trade with the rest of Somalia and Ethiopia.

Singapore is an unattainable goal for Puntland. We can learn somethings about administration from Singapore, but our goal should be to emulate countries like Jordan. Slowly building up our infrastructure and our human capital. It is not good to make huge policy leaps.

We can work to resolve things we know will limit our future potential like reducing childhood stunting & wasting, and making sure that primary school education is made universal.

Singapore upon independence in 1965 was far ahead of all countries in Africa.
They exaggerate how poor it was in 1965.

One simple thing the gov of Puntland can do is create city grids for future urbanization. When a city has a planned grid, the future costs of building infrastructure like electricity, sewage, water etc… goes down.

Take a look at Qardho and Garowe on google maps and compare them to Bosaso, Burtinle and Galkacyo.

Can you see how much more expensive it is going to be to build a sewage system in Burtinle vs Qardho? Try to follow a road in Bosaso on google maps and see how long it runs before it hits a house?

We need an office at the ministry of interior that can lay down city grids and then enforce them going forward. It would cost very little extra money and would have huge returns in the future.

Myanmar has the longest running Civil War. The Myanmar Civil War has been going on for 75 years straight.

@Thegoodshepherd the way botswana fights anti corruption is amazing. Parliament there has passed an anti corruption legislation and they have an instiution responsible for monitoring the govt and even market places.

The banks play a role where any suspicious payments are reported to the anti corruption commission, civilians even participate having hotlines and their identity concealed, plus if your caught in corruption its immediate 10 year mandatory sentence and a big fine. I only wish one day how our security institutions fight common crimes or terrorism this will happen to corruption. It's sad but an ummah oo aan tuugisa Iska gaban I'm sad to say their not considered an ummah in the world.

UK was a superior colonial power teaching rule.of law, property rights, and hard work ethics unlike Italy fascist Mussolini era who passed on his mafia culture to us, even modern day Italians got rid of him and follow the British system.
