It's a very strategic passage that Canada wants to exert sovereignty over and regulate like the Panama and Suez canal but others like the USA wants them to be declared an international passage like the Bosporus and Danish straits. With the continued warming up of the arctic it's going to be be a contentious area in the near future like the South China Sea. Canada is a close US ally but are they going to stand up for their national interest or will they cave in to American pressure.
