They can't verify your information as what write in the census doesn't get passed to other government departments like HMRC or Home office/immigration.
Even illegal immigrants are encouraged to send off the census without fearing prosecution

yeah the census is supposed to be confidential. If they have people check over each of the answers to prove validity, that would take way too much time. Also a breach of privacy. What if you’re in charge of checking your ex wife’s data?
