Excerpt from Tariq Jameel’s speeches and notes.
Relationship between husband and wife is very important one where outside relationships shouldn’t influence it. Even children shouldn’t interfere in the blessed relationship between husband and wife. Due to children, some wives dishonor their husbands and some husbands dishonor their wives.
Anas reported that the son of Abu Talba and Umm Sulaim died. She said to the members of her family: Do not narrate to Abu Talha about his son until I narrate it to him. Abu Talha came home from travel.
Abu Talha asked: How is my child? Umm Sulaim said: He is now in a more comfortable state than before.
She presented to him the supper. He took it and drank water. She then embellished herself which she did not do before. He had a sexual intercourse with her and when she saw that he was satisfied after sexual intercourse with her.
Although her son died, it was her self restraint and patience that she offered herself for intimacy. She hid her feelings seeking pleasure of Allah.
She said: Abu Talha, if some people borrow something from another family and then (the members of the family) ask for its return, would they resist its return?
He said: No.
She said: I inform you about the death of your son.
He was annoyed, and said: You did not inform me until I had a sexual intercourse with you and you later on gave me information about my son.
She said: You had just returned from the trip, it would have been difficult for you.
He went to Allah’s Messenger (saw) and informed him what had happened. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (saw) said: May Allah bless both of you in the night spent by you!..
(Muslim 2144b, 2144d)
Umm Sulaim was sublime that she didn’t allow children to become an obstacle in the relationship with her husband when her child has died. That was her self mastery. If this we are not able to do, as people earlier had company of Prophet (saw) and were refined. Today, we can at least aspire, don’t have a conflict due to children and become opponents.
