I've been following this whole caddaan studies hullabaloo for awhile. The thing I don't understand is, what do they want exactly? No white academics writing about Somalis? Safia Aidiid says that Somalis are marginalized and excluded from knowledge production in Somali Studies. If that's the case, where is this army of marginalized Somali academics and why haven't they started their own, more authentic journal yet? It all just seems so meta and navel-gazey.
She's disingenuous. This woman Safia Aideed has no shred of integrity and she wants to shame others from refraining from writing about Somali affairs. She wants to be the lone voice when it comes to Somali discourse, and she can't stand the idea of a White Man studying Somali history and demonstrating more competence/in-depth knowledge on the field than she.
Why else do you think she opposes this White Professor? She knows she can't actually challenge his ideas in the discourse of academic discussion, so she resorts to using Twitter to force this White man from quitting his position as a Somali-history scholar.
Her "opinion" is nothing more than trying to shut down opposing opinion. If she doesn't like what this White Professor had to say, then she's free to challenge him. But she would rather talk about "Cadaan Cultural Appropriation" in an attempt to shut this Professor down from speaking.
That's not opinion. That's Safia Aideed being a disingenuous brat who doesn't know the first thing about academic debate and discussion.
Second of all, what's wrong with White professors studying Somali history and language? Do we not see Somalis studying Russian history, or Japanese history, or French history? Why is Safia Aideed using this White professor's actions as a reason to argue that Somalis are being oppressed and being "erased by colonialists"?
If she doesn't like what this man has to say, she's free to earn her PhD and then speak about Somali history. Until then, she can kindly STFU.
