Could there be a second Somali federal MP in Canada by February?

The MP who was representing federal riding Ottawa-Vanier died in office from ALS so there is a vacancy to fill his seat.

One of the 10 liberal candidates running to represent the party in the by-election is Somali from Djibouti.

His name is Abdourahman Kahin. Below is his profile.

So this is literally the safest Liberal seat in the entire country. It has been Liberal since 1935 since records were kept. The guy who died won with 60% of the vote. His closest challenger won with almost 20% of the vote. The third challenger won with 2% as well.

So this riding is guaranteed to go Liberal in January/February (whenever it's called) to fill the vacancy.

The only issue here is he is facing like 10 other candidates to get the nomination of the party to run in the by-election for the party. This is his challenge, not the actual election to fill the seat. Conservatives and NDP stand no chance against the Liberals.

Stay tuned. We could have a second Somali person in Canadian Parliament before Spring.

Are Canada's liberals actual classical liberals or are they just social democrats?

The term liberal is used very differently around the world.

It's a very weird party. They were social lefties and fiscal conservatives before 2006 but now they are social lefties and they spend like drunken sailors.

They are even further left than the social democrats NDP now.

These are the policies they ran on in the last election (they abandoned the second last bullet though. FPTP works in their favour). They also exceeded their $10B limit deficits by tripling it.

  • Cut the middle class tax bracket ($45,000–$90,000) from 22% to 20.5% and create a new tax bracket for income above $200,000 taxed at 33%[18]
  • Set national targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions through cooperation with provinces, support Keystone XL with a stricter environmental review process, spend $20 billion over 10 years on "greener infrastructure"[18]
  • Run three years of deficits that will not exceed $10 billion to finance infrastructure projects and balance the budget in 2019[18]
  • Spend $60 billion in new infrastructure spending, including $20 billion in transit infrastructure and quadrupling federal funding for public transit, all over three years[18]
  • Invest $300 million annually to fund a Youth Employment Strategy[18]
  • Reduce employment insurance (EI) premiums from $1.88 per $100 to $1.65 per $100[18]
  • Replace the Universal Child Care Benefit with a Canada Child Benefit that would provide $2,500 more to an average family of four[18]
  • Support training efforts in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia; end the bombing mission against ISIS but increase humanitarian aid and training of local ground troops[18]
  • Take in 25,000 Syrian refugees and spend $100 million for refugee processing and settlement[18]
  • Negotiate a new health accord with the provinces to guarantee long-term funding, including a national plan for lower prescription drug prices[18]
  • Invest $3 billion over four years to improve home care[18]
  • Set up an all-party committee to pass legislation implementation of physician assisted death[18]
  • Full legalization of marijuana[19]
  • Implement electoral reform to move from a first-past-the-post electoral system to a system in which the seat count more closely match the popular vote[20]
  • Implementing a non-partisan appointment process for the Senate modeled on that of the Order of Canada, after having removed Liberal senators from the party caucus in 2014[21]

Liberal in Europe means right wing, lol. The liberal parties here are like the Republicans but without the Christian zealotry.

Nope, the European Liberals are pro-LGBT, pro-euthanasia, pro-cannabis etc etc, but when it comes to economics it's all about cutting government spending and lowering taxes.

Ah okay. Liberals here used to be liked that.

The Conservatives in Canada are kind of like the liberals in Europe but there is a minority that are social conservatives and have strong opinions on marijuana. Maybe 25% of the party. They all also love Jews and Israel

Do those kinds of liberals in Europe usually achieve success in elections? I know Norway has a "liberal" coalition in power

The most successful parties the past couple of decades were the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats. Both are somewhat similar to the US Democrats while the former is socially conservative.

However, in recent years I noticed it has swung more in the right-wing direction of classical Liberals vs Nationalists with the Christian/Social Democrats losing popularity.

This is great news. I really hope he wins. Having two MPs at the federal level would be amazing. :salute:

I'd say the social conservatives are more the 25%. They might even be the majority. The thing is that most of the social conservatives are smart enough to know that social conservatism doesn't play well in Canada and will put them at risk of losing their seat, so they keep those views to themselves. Harper was exactly like this. He was WAY more conservative socially then he let on.

Canada is financially conservative and politically white supremacist.

Canada is liberal by name only, because there are financial benefits from appearing liberal; especially when all cultures are turned into commodities under a banner of multiculturalism.
