Continuous impoverishment of the already scarce resources, harsh droughts, widespread use of the amphetamine-based leaf khat and unemployment have further weakened the country and contributed to the increase in poor mental health.

The main mental health diagnoses reported were schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, mania and generalised psychosis (acute and chronic). Substance misuse was often an additional comorbidity in men (khat and/or hashish)

Wasn't this already known ?
Not really. It's wrongly compared in many circles to recreational drugs like weed which dismisses its harm but according to this new Cambridge University report, there's been an explosion of mental health issues in Somaliland. 1 in 2 families have a mental patient.

Prior to the khat ban in Europe their would be former users describing how the drug affected them psychologically in the media to raise awareness on the dangers of it. Its good to have this more widely reported on in general to discourage people from consuming it wherever they are.

That's why the region keep producing brainless swamp dwellers like @TabK

That nigga has rigid brain. He's the definition of a retarded soul.

Edna Aden exposed her folk this bad. :damn:

I cannot believe some Muslims try to argue that consuming the Khat drug is permissible.

  • intoxicant that changes people's moods and behaviour.
  • It is said to cause erectile dysfunction
  • Rotting/damaged teeth
  • Psychosis
  • Waste of money
  • Waste of time on idle talk instead of working.

Remember the reports on "crack babies".. well, they need to research "khat babies" and see how they differ in appearance, IQ and overall health, smh.

This is why Abukar Awale "Qaaddiid" needs to be applauded for his efforts that resulted in a ban in the UK.

The source you pulled out mentioned khat only a few times and only briefly, whereas they were going more in depth with other reasons such as "post war trauma" and went more un depth on that

There was nothing exposed, all these researchers did was explain the lack of mental health facilities in the region, explained social stigmas around mental health in the community, and explained why it is an issue, and the reason why was less about khat than your buddy @sincity would like you to know (khat is still a problem) none of these challenges are unique to Somaliland, this is a problem among all Somalis

It is unique cause 90% of the males chew it. That's the highest consumption rate in the world with Yemen being a close 2nd. Khat is even marketed using Islam.

For example, the main importer brands his khat under the name of 571, which refers to the year the prophet Mohammed was born (cf. Anderson et al., 2007:59).

Similarly, another khat brand, now out-competed during a price war with the 571 brand, was marketed under the name of B611, which refers to the year when the prophet Mohammed received his first revelation.

This is also a great study and blog detailing the mental health problems Khat causes in Somaliland, a region where the consumption is staggering.

Almost 90% or more men in Somaliland chew Khat despite its psychological, economic, and societal destruction. Khat is an addictive substance that causes psychological dependence. However, Khat chewers will dispute this claim without considering the many dangers to their mind and body, and the devastations it causes to the economy. "Indeed, such behavior strongly suggests the development of psychic dependence and is reflected in the excessive consumption of Khat." (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 1980/01/01).

What did I just read?

These khat pushers are naming their drug after the Prophet SAW's birthdays?

The End Days are upon us.
