English words borrowed from Somali language

It's common for languages to borrow words from each other, as it's a way to keep them alive and thriving, much like eating healthy foods and exercising is for the body. While you may have heard of many Somali words that have been borrowed from other languages, have you ever come across English words that originated from Somali language?

  1. Beyraac = Beira
  2. Garanuug = Gerenuk
  3. Maydi = Maydi
  4. Warsangali = Warsangli bird
  5. Waabay = Ouabain
  6. Dabataag = Dibatag
One more thing. French also borrowed the word Waabay.
