I always hold him in high esteem until I read that the main candidate to replace PM Davutoglu, the architect of Turkey's successful foreign policy, is his own son in law. I don't have any problems with power hungry, benevolent dictators but I can't respect corruption and nepotism.

PM Davutoglu skillfully forced the EU to enter a lucrative deal with his country which includes visa-free travel. Europeans were even so desperate that Germany prosecuted a comedian who insulted Erdogan.

Maybe he's jealous that Davutuglu came closer to the EU in 2 years than he ever did in his 10 years as PM.

So did he fire him and replace him with his nephew?

He can't fire him. But since Erdogan handpicked the delegates of the party, they will vote him out and therefore he won't lead the party.

The son in law is a senior minister now and he's among the candidates to replace the PM as the party leader.

Politics is just backstabbing. Horrible but at least they got the EU visa free travel.

He seemed quite sincere about tackling the refugee crisis and he's also a strong proponent of keeping the mosque and the state separate which is quite important for Turkish citizens who don't adhere to the dominant held interpretation of Islam. His departure will undoubtedly cause a political uncertainty in Turkey. What a loss!
