UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council has renewed an arms embargo on Somalia and Eritrea citing a continuing threat from al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants.

The 15-member council on Thursday approved the renewal of sanctions with 10 nations voting in favor and five abstaining.

“The sanctions are preventing al-Shabab from having the incoming weapons that they otherwise would,” Matthew Rycroft, the U.N. ambassador from the United Kingdom, which drafted the resolution, said before the vote.

China, a veto-holding council member, abstained.

China’s deputy U.N. ambassador said the sanctions were not conducive to strengthening cooperation between the countries in the region and said it hoped the council will take into account the changes on the ground and adjust the embargo accordingly.

The arms embargo shouldn't have even been eased. HSM and da bois were able to get to work. I wonder how much of these guns ended in Al-Shabab hands.

The two diplomats, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter, said through photographic evidence it was calculated between 35 to 40 percent of automatic rifles and other small arms on sale on the Mogadishu black market were imported by the government under the exemption.

U.N. reports identified some cases of government weapons and ammunition being sold on the market. But these findings, revealed by diplomats and analysts to Reuters, are the most comprehensive examination of the problem and show its scale.

The Somali government says it needs more guns to keep its army equipped. Western allies are keen to strengthen Somalia's armed forces fighting al Shabaab but fear that money and equipment will be siphoned off.

Atleast China is looking out for us. They know they would be used in the grand Darood vs. Hawiye jihaad lol (Hawiye should relax, you can't Jihaad with you bros). The Chinese know it will only serve to exacerbate the conflict in Somalia.

They could have at least trained our soldiers like NATO does
I somehow trust NATO more than China, them just starting to jump into Africa and especially Ethiopia seems so fishy

Somalia doesn't want a true national army. These clowns in Mogadishu got PL to agree to 3k soldiers being integrated in the national army, today nothing. The other day thegoodshepard posted something about Jubbaland agreed some 1k soldiers. To this date they got like 100 aks or something lol. They want to keep everything as it is, the Somali National militia. It would serve their interests better.

We know how to defend ourselves thank you. Defend yourselves against them though
No one even recognises Somaliland so your army is just a glorified police force. They most likely have sub-standard or poor training compared to SNA (as shit as they are)
Just join us traitors

As I said, sub-standard training and no outside partnerships. When the northern Somali province troops hear a gunshot they'll flee just like the Iraqi soldiers did against Isis
