Arabic is important for obvious reasons, but Mandarin isn’t really useful unless you want to go to China. I think Spanish is great; I’m learning it at the moment. As for French, I’m not a fan. Are you currently learning any languages?

Yesterday I came across a FKD session held by three ethiopians on tiktok. One amhara woman and oromo woman aa dhulka isla galen in fluent af-somali. I have never been so confused.

The day before that I saw an amhara (?) woman deep in Ethiopia wearing baati (alindi print). Another oromo woman (had the tree flag hanging on the wall) on tiktok singing somali songs and preferred to speak somali.

So my question is do you lot envision a future horn of Africa where the somalis are culturally dominant?

The irony is that the likelihood of finding a Somali who knows Amharic is way less than 60 years ago. My awoowe use to speak Amharic but even in k5 they barely speak it.

This is why knowing history is incredibly important. A lot of Somalis are just like you, they see these people who at time slightly resemble us and can speak our language and jump to assimilation.

Problem number 1: We are not an assimilation culture. In order to assimilate the idea of a Somali would need to be expanded without a xenophobia. Mind you, in 100s of years we have only listened to ethnic Somalis and pushed them out. We have never successfully assimilated any group. In fact Somalis are getting even more xenophobic that ethnic Somalis who speak different dialects are being pushed out. Unrealistic.

Problem number 2: Groups like Afar already have a strong identity and part of that identity is hatred of Somalis. If you takes some time to research how the country of Djibouti came to be you will realize it’s only through spitefulness of the afar. They would rather live under colonialism than give Somalis any power. Mind you the afar are a minority and never lived in jabouti in large numbers. They had every reason to side with Somalis but through sheer hate and spite screwed over themselves AND Somalis.

It was a different one I think. The anfar lady was insulting a cisse runner who was representing jabouti. An cisse guy was insulting canfars, gudabursis and isaaqs. Was a complete mess.
