Ethiopia's grand plan: Unification of the Horn of Africa

Background:
The modern Ethiopian Navy was established by Emperor Haile Selassie, with the assistance of the United Kingdom, in 1955 and had its Naval Headquarters in:
  • Massawa with presence in:
    • Assab
    • Dhalak Islands and
    • Asmara.

  • From 1991, its navy started using Yemeni bases.
  • Then Jibouti, but by 1996, its navy ceased to exist, but with commercial fleet using Massawa & Assab.
    • That too ceased post the 1998 war between Ethiopia & Eritrea.

The plan:

  • The plan, former Ethiopian diplomat Mr Birhanemeskel said, was to push for the "unification of the Horn of Africa as an economic bloc and the navy is part of that project".
    • 11 Ethiopian commercial ships in a "very volatile" Red Sea area where Ethiopia has other economic interests.
  • Kenya, Somaliland, and Djibouti as possible locations for bases.

The Kenyan option
  • In May, Ethiopia agreed a deal with Kenya to facilitate the acquisition of land in the island of Lamu as part of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (Lapsset) project, a $24bn(ยฃ18bn) transport and infrastructure plan to link the two countries and their neighbours.
    • The project was signed in 2012 but has been beset by funding delays and security problems in both countries.

Postscript:

Acquiring a port by all means is his contribution to Ethiopiaโ€™s greatness. โ€œWe want to get a port by peaceful means. But if that fails we will use forceโ€, he told a meeting of businessmen.

Ethiopiaโ€™s โ€˜Empire of the Mindโ€™
Just as Abiy appeared to be engaged in โ€˜Ethiopiaโ€™s democratic revolutionโ€™, in reality he was conjuring up the spirits of the Abyssinian Empire. โ€œMom told me I'll be Ethiopia's 7th Kingโ€, Abiy said during his inaugural address to parliament in 2018. โ€œLook at me, I'm now your Prime Minister," he added. Ever since the Abyssinian empire ended in 1974, Ethiopiaโ€™s โ€˜empire of the mindโ€™ has been snuggly lodged in the minds of its rulers.

The Ethio-Somaliland territorial deal threatens to trigger Abiyโ€™s fourth war in five years:
  • The first against the Oromo Liberation Army;
  • Second against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF); and
  • The third against the Amhara militia known as Fano.

A unified Horn of Africa would instantly turn into a the world's largest failed state. The world is not ready for a Yugoslaviax10.

That is the intent.

Notwithstanding regional security and cultural factors, but one would have thought the economic implications alone, as astounding as other factors are, would deter Ghelle and Bixi to think twice.

a) How is Gheelle planning to make up the shortfall in his annual budget?
  • 'Reliance on Djibouti for external trade has resulted in a yearly payment of around $1.5 billion in port fees, almost half Ethiopiaโ€™s annual foreign earnings from goods sales'
b) The same applies to SL at the Berbera port, which is its primary source of revenue.
  • 78% SL's annual budget is from the Berbera port: 330 million of the 425 million.
    • ' Sida ku cad miisaaniyada bage-keeda 28aad, 98% Dakhliga guud ee dawladda waxa uu ka iman doona Kastamada iyo Cashuuraha Berriga, halka 2% uu ka iman doono Wasaradaha iyo Hayaโ€™ddaha kale e dawladda. Saamiga ugu badan waxa uu ka iman doona Kastamada 78% halka cashuuraha Berigu ka yihiin 20%. Geesta kale, Saamiga kastamada ayaa wali ah kan ugu badan Dakhliga Dawladda tan iyo intii Somaliland jirtay, taa cakiskeeda, Saamiga Cashuuraha Berriga'

Horn of Africa under Ethiopian rule.
Itโ€™s kind of funny that Ethiopian Nationalist Christian Oromo and Christian Amhara, who have the lowest fertility rates in Ethiopia, are the ones pushing for more integration with majority Muslim Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea. Pure hubris.

Reminds you of Menelik II taking over so many different ethnic groups that he made the Amhara, and by extension Orthodox Christianity, a minority in Ethiopia. Also reminds me of Haile Selassie asking the UN to give him British and Italian Somalilands. These people either canโ€™t do math or they have a death wish.

A horn of Africa would be riddled with ethnic and religious tensions. Ethiopia alone is riddled with ethnic fanatic groups advocating for their own ethno state. Meanwhile Somalia is plagued by clan conflicts and religious fanatics, both of whom make consolidating power harder. Yugoslavia was the union of all South Slavic nations and it ate itself alive, I would rather not have Somalis be subjected to a Bosnian style genocide.

''Unifcation'' in other words ''unified'' under the boot of Ethiopia. Their mindset has clearly not changed.

Africans are just incredibly retarded. So much so that it gives you a migraine. I explain to Habeshas online:

"You have the lowest fertility, are going to become less relevant, and the Muslims in the East that are becoming more prominent are not even excited about the prospect of ruling Ethiopia. Its in Tigray, Somali, Amhara, etc interest to break the whole thing up amicably. Eritrea's population only grew 6x in comparison to Kenya's 18x over the last 90 years because they kept shedding people and having their potential shrunk due to constant war, let's avoid continued misery."

They nod along, but want to double down by annexing other people's lands, keep in mind this is the English speaking diaspora. Only the really high IQ ones understand the implications of their trajectory.

I can understand why this doomed continent is where it is.
