The European Union (EU) will commence the payment of the salaries of the Somali Police Force as part of security building strategies.

The new EU Ambassador to Somalia, Ms Veronique Lorenzo, stated that the 6,800 police officers will receive the payment next week, Africa Review reported.

She added that the regular salary payment to the police force was the responsibility of the Somali government, but the EU’s assistance was meant to boost the morale of the force.

“This payment by the EU is intended to encourage the police to boost the security, law enforcement and restoration of proper order,” said Ms Lorenzo.

Without specifying any amount, the ambassador stated that the money would be channelled through the police force’s account at the Central Bank of Somalia.

“This will be easy, speedy and transparent act,” she added.

The diplomat, who presented her credentials to Somali President Hassan Mohamoud, last week, said the intervention would support the police’s agenda to reform the security sector.

The Somali ministry of Finance and the EU have recently announced a new salary payment modality, promising a pilot scheme to be applied to a section of the security sector before a complete roll out.

Somalia was struggling to rebuild the state institutions after more than two decades of civil war, with the EU being one of its main supporters in the recovery.

How is it transparent if the sum hasn't been disclosed and it is going through the Central Bank of Somalia.

This is good news in the sense that the Somali Policeman can now get paid every few months. Atleast he will get some change thrown his way every now and then.

Aid money goes directly to the Federal Government of Somalia and to Somaliland. Somaliland get it seperate because these donor nations know Somaliland will not misuse the funds to the same magnitude as the Federal government of Somalia. Most of the money donated to the FG goes through aid aigencies because they know without a doubt that it will be plundered. PL only gets funding for projects that they lobby for. Like their roads. Their civil servants do not get paid like SL since it goes through the FG, their does SSW or Jubbaland. If the money goes to Mogadishu it never leaves Mogadishu. In the last 25 years there hasn't been projects from FG that are intended for the nation rather than Mogadishu.
