From Opening Speech by Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan at the Special Conference on Somalia he talks about the century old relations between Somalia and Japan.

β€œIn 1587, Ito Mancio and other members of the Tensho embassy in Europe, who were the first Japanese people to visit Europe, also became the first Japanese people to visit Mogadishu, Somalia, during a trip from Rome. I can only feel that, after more than 420 years since Japan and Somalia’s first encounter, it is historical destiny for Japan to be able to contribute to the reconstruction of Somalia by holding this Conference.”

The Portuguese were there to conquer and convert us. Plus they were teaming up with the opps.

We showed Vasco Da Gama’s son wassup and they kept it moving.

Then it shows more of a nuanced attitude towards europeans than the simplistic attitude of anti christian/white man you would think.

You think when that Japanese representative was walking around Mogadishu he was wondering what does β€œindo yaar” mean?

10 years before the death of Cristavao, his other son Estavao Da Gama, the future Governor of India, bought a ship at Mogadishu, no doubt to check out the city’s defences.
