Southerner - I super hate pseudo uplifting poetry, that poem makes me depressed as hell, especially knowing that its on high school reading lists with no filter. The only way to help black kids get ahead is to make their lives about them, not some old fart who remembers segregation era politics. How about drawing a line under the whole thing and equipping black children with skills and knowledge that will help them get ahead. Maya Angelou is a child abuser and so are her publishers.
