The first equipments with which Garacad port will soon be constructed, in shaa Allaah, were presented today at an event held in Gaalkacyo.

1. This project is located in GARACAD, 700 KM from Mogadishu, and 920 KM from Bosaso and 1400KM from Berbera (coastal distance) and is the deepest port(-12M).
2. The capacity of the port is calculated as 3,500,000 tons per year -which is much higher than demand.
3. An expansion area has been allocated covering nearly 100,000 m² reserve area, specifically for container operations.
4. Project covers a storage expansion area of 125,000 m2, 925M access road and 1150M of Breakwater.
5. This port can accommodate 2 cargo ships of 10,000 DWT (2×750 containers 20’)/25,000 DWT.

That looks like road construction equipment to me. An excavator, a grader, a few tandem tipper trucks, and a smooth drum roller. All that's missing is a water cart (there are many in Somalia) and, a paver, and probably a mobile asphalt plant.

According to another thread, this will be the most technologically advanced port in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abdiweli gaas has signed a deal with Saudi Arabia to finance the building of a new port in garacad which will be the most advanced port in subsaharan Africa.

I don't believe Saudi Arabia is involved anymore. This appears to be self funded.

That's even better. We don't have to give up the port for decades and this will teach the Somalis living in Somalia that we can do things on our own.

This will be at least a ten year project, but it's a good start. It doesn't have to be a modern deep sea port. If it's a bit better than Ceel Macaan port it will have a huge added value. If a road to Ethiopia is built, that would seal the region's destiny forever.

An ceel macaan like port with a road would be more than enough.
