Yes, you read it right.
Two ajnabis went to hargeysa, djibouti, and moqdishu to revive old tapes of geeljire music. Some 10,000 tapes were hidden under the ground by radio broadcasters & journalists in hargeysa during the late 80's as the city was getting bombed heavily. This was one of the ways of protecting geeljire music history.
30 years later, the music has been dug up, put together, re-mastered, and nominated by the Grammys for Best Historical Album.
For those that want to listen, the album is called
Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa
Those that sang well had their voice likened to the sweetness of a timir hence the name of the album. I think the story was something like that lmao
