Today, Sunday, the 15th of September, is Eid Al Mawlid. Eritreans nationwide come together to celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed. Today, Eid Al Mawlid was celebrated at Al Khulafah Al Rashidin, the grand mosque of Asmara. The Mufti of Eritrea, Salim Ibrahim Al Muktar, held a religious sermon at the grand mosque of Asmara. In addition, leaders of the Christian church, government officials, and members of the Eritrean Defence Forces attended the holy Eid Al Mawlid celebration.

Every year, Eritreans gather on Eid Al Mawlid to celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed. Islam has a long history in Eritrea. Islam arrived in Eritrea after the family of the Holy Prophet Mohammed, known as Sahaba, sought refuge in present-day Eritrea. Eritrea is also home to the oldest mosque in Africa, located in the coastal city of Massawa in Eritrea.
