Hello! Reer xamar trying to understand my DNA test results

Hello,

I joined this forum because I mainly identify as Somali, however upon doing a DNA test, I realised I am not as Somali as expected.

I am essentially what you would call reer xamar : 41% Yemen / KSA (DNA test does not specifically point to Yemen, surprisingly), 31% Somalia, 17% Ethiopia / Eritrea, 5% Egypt, 5% Southern and Eastern Bantu, 1% India

No one can account for the non-Yemeni and non-Somali heritage, which I find surprising!

No one in my family could explain why I have distant Indian heritage on my mum’s side (apparently the journey was from Gujurat to Pune area and then it’s not clear what the rest of the journey was). I am also shocked to see Egyptian on my dad’s side and we don’t know why.

Can anyone please help me understand what is going on? All my life I’ve been told we are reer xamar / mawalad and that was the end of the question. I know I have Hadrami origins on my mum’s side and Ibb (Yemen) and Hawiye my dad’s side.

Today, I want to learn more about my history.
Please help me understand if you know anything about the reer xamar! Why is there Egyptian ancestry? Why Bantu? Why Indian? Why Ethiopian? So many questions that no one can clarify for me :(

Thank you!!!

From my limited understanding of Reer Xamar, it's essentially a tribe (not a Somali clan) who lives in Xamar and in the regions around there and they are known for being mixed due to international trade, historically speaking. It's not surprising that you trace most of you're DNA from foreigners as is a custom of your tribe.

Whats the difference between a tribe and a clan they both refered to as qabiil, is it just one's bigger?

If it’s below 5% it’s basically mute, no one can account for it or understand where it would’ve come from, it’s not real to be honest. and dna companies often add in a random ethnic group at less than 1% just to make the results more exciting, I got 1% eskimo on mine, and I know damn well no eskimo would’ve given up the icy glaciers of the north for scorching hot Somalia.

The difference between a tribe and a clan is that a tribe is essentially a ethnolingutic term - meaning the people all share the same language and the same ethnicity = Somalis.

Now the difference with clans is that this is within a tribe and is used to trace your geneology/family name, for example Darood or Isaaq and their respective sub clans would be Majerteen etc... These are names of notable Somali men who you can trace your paternal line/geneology to. Hope that makes some sense
