What if you're Somali and can barely write in Afsomali, can you still get the degree? :browtf:

They don't teach dying languages the same way, for that you usually do a Phd because of the amount of research it requires.

Technically Philology is dead or dying language. Somali language is far from dying.

Somali language is dying.

Diaspora children can't speak Somali and Somalis in Africa are being forced to speak Amhara, Kiswahili and English.

My adopted kids won't be able to speak Somali because I can't speak it

Grandma @Duchess isn't fluent enough to teach her kids Somali. Even fluent Somali speakers weren't able to teach Diaspora kids Somali. Its over for the Somali language

10 million native speakers in two officially Somali countries can change that :superman:

The core is what matters. It is alive and well in the Horn with a growing population.

Many African ethnic groups are in a worse situation. I know a Bilen Eritrean guy and instead of speaking his native Bilen his family switched over to Sudanese Arabic. Many small African languages are being swallowed up by larger dominant languages. This isn't the case with Somali.

I don't know an Eritrean who can't speak his language and there are tens of thousands in this city. They are all recent refugees. They value their language.

Somalis in the Diaspora can read the Quran with no issue but can't read Somali news articles

Bilen is a minority language spoken by nomadic Muslims of Western Eritrea near Sudan.

You are thinking of the dominant Tigrinyas. Yeah, they all speak their language. But the case I mentioned was an Eritrean minority group. The guy literally only spoke Arabic with his relatives.

There are plenty of Eritreans who speak better Arabic than their native language and better English than Arabic. In fact they're more at risk because they have 9 national languages and the state can't develop a curriculum on all of them.

The Eritreans all moved to Sudan. I met many of these people who lived in Sudan their whole lives but they still spoke their Tigrinya language fluently.

Eritreans cant be compared to Somalis.

@Amun langaab Eritreans are irrelevant and the case you gave is an exception. Do you know less than 10% of NA Somalis can even speak Somali at a conversational level?
