RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) _ President Mohammed Siad Barre of Somalia is recovering satisfactorily from injuries suffered in an auto accident last week, the official Saudi news agency reported Tuesday.



King Fahd sent a Saudi air force hospital plane for Siad Barre after the accident Friday near Mogadishu, capital of the predominantly Moslem nation on the Horn of Africa.



Somalia’s state radio said the 67-year-old president’s car overturned in torrential rains as he was being driven back from a visit to the southern province of Lower Shabelle.



Foreign Minister Abdel-Rahman Barre of Somalia was quoted in the Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq al-Awsat earlier in the day as saying Siad Barre’s condition was improving but he remained in the intensive care unit.



It quoted Dr. Rashed al-Tihami, head of the Saudi medical team treating Siad Barre, as saying he was unconscious when he reached the hospital, suffering from concussion and injuries to the head and chest.



Mayor Hassan Eissar of Mogadishu and five guards, all of whom were traveling with Siad Barre from Lower Shabelle, also were brought to the Riyadh hospital for treatment but were less seriously injured and would be discharged soon, the newspaper said.
