He is calling for a confederation not independence (the latter is what Eritrea received). Confederation is different than independence. We are fine with a 'loose confederation' as he puts it. It will just isolate the troublesome khat chewer clan to their region without giving them sovereignty. All the khat chewer grievances about 'our region is underdeveloped' and 'we don't have enough political power in the south' will become moot with a confederation.

This is the man behind eritrea's breakaway from Ethiopia.

Somaliland if it comes back (Big if, I might add) to the union has all the leverage in any deal. This man is correct that it will most likely be a confederation with maximum autonomy and not a simple union like before in 1960.

You actually have very little leverage.
The international community has ignored Somaliland for the past 25 years.
The only temporary exception is UAE, which is salty about getting shut out of Mogadishu.
Leverage implies that you can't be ignored. But the fact is, we've ignored you for decades and can continue to ignore you, and so has the international community. Somaliland has very little to offer.
Somalia's interest in Somaliland is just to prevent sovereignty, and we've succeeded. Even your new BF UAE proclaims that it recognizes only one Somalia.
