Between 1877 and 1883 he repeatedly toured Somalia . His work Voyages au Cap des Aromates (1880) describes the expedition of the "Adonis" to the coasts of East Africa and his second voyage to Somaliland (Medjourtine). Révoil was an avid photographer . So he brought back photos and slides from today's Somalia and the area around Mogadishu

Also are you sure one of the men in your photos is Abgaal? Says nothing about qabil. I'm more inclined to believe he is Somali Bantu just from his looks tbh. I've never seen the thing on his head as well.

I got the photo from the same site, it seems they changed the caption. Luckily I have an engraving of the same photograph with the correct caption.

Good find the headgear was throwing me off, I didn't think it was Somali never seen that worn before. I wonder if there is a name for it in the south. They are both archers as well which is pretty cool to see.

It's strange to see tribesmen from supposed noble Somali clans carrying archery instead of the usual spear, it seems the disdain for archers was limited to the Northern clans. I have seen photos of Tunni and Bimal armed with Bow and Arrows.

Poison arrows were used by all Cushites since from Nubia in antiquity to Rwanda. Iirc the most popular poison, ouabain (ouabaio in French), entered the western world from Revoil's expeditions. Nowadays it's used as an active agent in some heart medications.
