I notice some terms are very frequent in Somali maps. Raas Casayr, Raas Katiib, Raas Kambooni, Laas Suraad, Laas Geel, Laas Canood, Bandar Qaasim, Bandar Bayla, Bandar Murcaayo etc

Raas = cave
Laas = valley?
Bandar = Port
Plural form of Bandar being Banaadir "the Ports"

@Mckenzie

Ras = Head in Arabic

Bandar = Harbor in Arabic

Laas = Source of water, for example Laas Geel means the water place for camels.

Laas Surad = The water near by the mountain. Surad is a mountain.

Raas and Ra's are pronounced differently. You could very well be right and maybe it's just a Somalisized term instead.

I think the Arabic influence is prevalent in the North and the Swahili influence is prevalent in the South. The only Arabic influenced city names in the South we have are Beledweyne, Beled xaawo Beled Amiin etc where Beled means town

rest of the time we are dealing with places like Kansuuma and Jajuuma and Kismaayo and Libooy :dead:

True but they mean the same-thing. Have you watched The Arrow series? The guy who calls him Ra's Al Ghaul which
basically means Demons Head :lol: , Ras Katib means head of khatib (head of a Imam) :lol: , it is good way to learn Arabic.

Yes I noticed Lower Jubba has lots of Swahili names that is because they lived there and still do.

@Duke of Harshaw and @Mckenzie the names in Lower Juba are only swahili on the coast. Liboi, Badhaadhe, Hoosingow and any other weird names inland is Oromo. If you go further and places like Garissa, Bura, Hulugho, Ijara all are Oromo place names. Remember that less than 120 years ago everything south of the Juba was Oromo.

Hoosingow sounds Somali. The rich diverse history of Lower Jubba region should be protected.
