Once it's in your body you're saddled with it for life but it doesn't survive outside of the body for longer than a minute. When you have unprotected sex you're giving it an efficient, safe way to enter your body. Same as two desperate drug addicts using a needle one after the other. The flu virus is actually more resilient outside of the body.
