Horn of Africa's Largest Wind Power Plant to be Built in DDS

"Ethiopia's Ministry of Finance has signed an agreement with the UAE's AMEA Power for the construction of a 300MW wind project in Aysha in the Somali Region State, eastern Ethiopia.

Signed at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, the agreement will see AMEA Power develop the US$600 million project under a public-private partnership.

The wind farm will be spread across 18,000 hectares and will produce approximately 1.22TWh of electricity a year. About 2,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction and operations phases.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the Aysha 1 wind farm will be the largest wind energy project in the Horn of Africa region"

UAE treat Somalia and Ethiopia differently.

500 to 1000mw wind farms should be built in the northern regions to power industries like a new salt factory at Hafun that could be a world player, or the Berbera cement plant, with each farm also having transmission lines reaching every corner of the country. The South could set up hydro dams on its rivers for a real Industrial Revolution.

I swear this should have been done decades ago, we are really sleeping. What are we doing? A country without guardians, you can only dream.

Ethiopia planning all renewable energy by 2030 very impressive for African nation

Do you guys know where power distribution will run too? It’s very interior of country it seems where wind farm will be placed

Not sure about the power distribution, but there's already an existing wind power plant in the same district, Ayshaca, that's connected to the national electric grid. They started building it in 2018 at a cost of 257 million USD together with China.

The phase II of the construction is still undergoing, but some of the windmills/turbines are done and operational today. The wind farm has a capacity of 120 MW and produces up to 467 GWh per year.

The link below has a video where they view the building process and explain in part how it works.

Good to see China doing the work they are very efficient.

my concern is if they are just tying into existing national grid will mean most of somali people will be screwed who were outside of it in first place

I kind of agree. Today, only about 55% of the people in Ethiopia have access to electricity. And the Ethiopian government have for the longest time talked about increasing their reach all over the country, in particular with the completion of GERD and other power projects (as well as exporting the surplus to Somalia). But the distribution of transmission line has gone very slow, and they focus primarily on urban areas. The national figure for rural areas is less than 30%.

Also, even though it will be connected to the national grid, the state owned 'Ethiopian Electric Power/utility' is fairly decentralized and divided into branches for each region. The 'Somali Region Electric Utility' is responsible for the electricity in DDS, which I assume the power plant in Ayshaca will be connected to. Not sure tho.
