How come North American Somalis don't travel as often back home?

Most of my Somalis I know have never went to check it out. I find that the ones who do go go because of dhaqan celis in their earlier years.

Money isn't an issue if you go every two years. Grown kids can pay their own $2000 ticket.

Myself, personally, I don't go due to not speaking enough Somali to hold a conversation.

European Somalis go to Somalia for long vacations.

I think it could be that European Somalis have a very large Somalilander population and Somalilanders tend to be very patriotic. But southern Somali Europeans also go back home in large numbers.

I'm starting to think European Somalis are probably more cultured or that they don't feel at home in Europe.

Yes it's a bit cheaper to fly to Africa from Europe but that doesn't seem to be the main factor. Most don't travel to Africa every year.

Abdi, what is the tribal makeup of Ottawa? I know there's a lot of Reer Djoubiti here since Ottawa is a French speaking city, but is it mostly Hawiye or Isaaq, Majarteen, etc?

I don't see a lot of Somalilanders in Ottawa.

No dictator can imprison a population forever.
My family has gone back for business, and some are currently there. I have my studies so I couldn't go. The Canadian dollar is shit right now, so it's quite expensive to convert to USD.

Dir are the largest. Then Isaaq. Then Darod. Then Hawiye. But it is Isa, Gadabursi and MJ in that subclan order.

Isaaq live in the suburbs which is why you don't see them. But they are large. But they are a lot larger in Toronto and Edmonton.

Native Europeans themselves also travel more than Americans (you find pesky Englishmen in every country). Perhaps it's just a cultural thing.

It comes down to money. Around this time a retour ticket from Europe to Somalia through Dubai will cost you 600 euros. In high season it will be around 900. North Americans who are mostly on food stamps cant afford to pay 2000 dollar.

Somalilanders are lucky as they have several alternative routes to go back home. The cheapest alternative is to land in Addis and take a taxi/bus to Jigjiga and from there again to hargeisa. It wont cost you more than 500 euros

I think somalis in Europe are more connected to their roots than N.A somalis and do not seem themselves as europeans, ,ost of somalis in europe have intergrated as much as somalis elsewhere and most youth here see the future in somalia and not europe.

@AbdiJohnson cuz it's too far for us especially when most of us in NA on average get 2 weeks vacay off a year. Too little time to spend back home for such a long journey. Once in a while maybe but not every year.

Europe lets you be yourself. You just need to speak the language and obey the law. It's seen as strange to ask someone to be fully European, it's discouraged and home ties to your own land is commended as long as it's all positive. In North America they're all too Canadian or American. Europe is authentic, historic and they look for that UN others. So European Somalis are second or third generation migrants on the ground and that makes you homesick. That's why our community like it here. They can raise Somali kids.

There's a double standard though. Second or third generation white immigrants (mainly from Central-Eastern Europe or the New World) will be considered German, British, Dutch, French etc once they are fully integrated, but for nonwhites this will never happen.

There's a racial element to nationalism in Europe that America doesn't have.

True but I don't really care because our cultures are so different that we'd never really integrate in the same way as two Europeans. They'll forfeit that other identity and we won't.

it's very common & affordable here in Europe to travel every summer or christmas break.

It's pretty much a european cultural thing.

This is true!

Here in Scandinavia they don't consider us Swedish, Norwegian or Dannish.

They call us "Utlänningar" which means foreigner.

Born here, Integrated or not we are constantly reminded that we are outsiders and not native.

But in North America its different , people overthere will deny who they are pump out their chest and tell me how they are more canadian/american/black then they are Somali. Most cant Even hold a basic convo in Af Soomaali. They have this cringe dual identity going on overthere, which makes no sense America/Canada are culturally pluralistic societies compared to Europe. It would make more sense for immigrants in North America to maitain their cultural identity rather than Europe

The following are true depiction of the reasons:

Europe is already half way and tickets are $700

Youths over there are so somali it is shocking ..in the UK they know the boography of somali singers ..if u have them on your SC you'll see them jamming to maxamed BK..they are deeply cultured although they are born in Europe ..

Hargeisa has become their play ground. They drive around Hargeisa like the king of England. They own mansions. Locals hold huge admiration for them. Chicks go there to have fun and hook up with the few North Americans thru can. their dudes go there to eat uncontrolled amount of khat and also smash local desperate gazelles

They are running away from demons in their homes in the UK, unemployment and dreary weather.

Some, on my Sc, apparently just settled down there although I can't comprehend how an early 20s person can just settle down in SOMALIA with no job and no education attained from back home.

Majority of them go there to flaunt and see their mansion they build with ceedh money that their parents build.

These factors are somewhat non-existent for the North American youth.

Cause home is where the heart is, just look at duchess Somali & my Somali lol mind you I was raised up in the west all my life. I think most North Americans are programmed to forget about their country & be proud of the country they're currently residing in.

Where I live it only cost 750 dollar return ticket to Nairobi, KE which is very cheap though I pay only tax if i want holiday cuz I work at the Airport.
If they work just 5 days they are able to buy Air ticket. is just close to nothing here in US.

Nah, bro. Here in the US, we use "back home" more as a dhaqan celis threat than anything else.:ftw9nwa:

It all seems so far away.

I really do get the impression European Somalis travel more back home.
