diesel generators such as these, even in developed countries diesel generators are used for demand management for when other sources are low or offline (such as wind/solar) its just they have renewables imbedded to alleviate the need of fossil fuels not the case for Somalia who has to rely on fossil fuels for most of the big cities
While the rest of the world is transitioning to 100% renewable energy, Somalia is still using diesel generators. As compared to other energy sources, electricity from diesel generators is prohibitively expensive to the final consumers.
The total installed power generation capacity in Somalia is about 20 Megawatts. This amount is not even enough to power a single small sized city in the developed world. To say it politely Somalias energy sector is still stuck in the middle ages. Only 18% of the population have access to electricity; 25% in urban areas and less than 5% in rural areas.
There is hope though for the energy sector in Somalia. This is because nature has blessed Somalia with a lot of potential for wind and solar energy.
