To the contrary, the Somali people had been far more economically superior to their neighbors. Berbera was so wealthy by the 19th century standards that it's said 80% of Adens revenue came from Berbera in 1848. What runied the Somali peninsula's economy as well as the economies of the rest of Africa was the intervention of the Europeans in Africa's economy. You can observe the effects of the African growth in the social and economical differences between the Somali diaspora in the west and the Somali diaspora in Africa and how they both fare despite the situation of the countries they live in. Here's a lecture by the brilliant professor George Aittey of the prestigious American University in DC explaining how European socialism runied Africa's economy.
