How Sufi, not Wahabis, ended loose clothing in Somalia and brought back the Hijab

Many so called "anti extremists" and secularist Somalis love to wax poetically about Somalia during the civilian administration and the kacaan and Pics of Women in western clothing to show how "Wahabis" and Salafis ended traditional Somali culture and Sufism. Recently this post showing "Somalia before Wahabism" went viral but in reality this couldnt be furthur from the truth



However, the reality is that Sufis where anything but quiet acceptors of secular modernity or loose dress codes. The famous Sheikh Aweys Al Barawi of the Qadarriyah Order was known for banning immoral dances in Mogadishu and completely eliminating them. So too did most Jamaacas in Somalia enforce a strict dress code and enforced on others. Historically, Sufism in Somalia has not been spinning around in circles and approving all types of degeneracy but in fact quite the opposite.

The dress code seen in many of the pictures above which secularists, lahabites, and degenerates of all stripes commonly post to show how "moderate" and "progressive" Somalia was before the "Wahabi" da'wah is anything but Somali in origin rather these western clothing were a result of the American sexual revolution. In 1960 American students influenced by the hippie movement, sexual revolution, and a bunch of other progressive movements in Somalia began to introduce many evils into Somali society including revealing western clothing, prostitution, and alcohol. However this clashed considerably with traditional Somali society and mores which made the peace corps public enemy #1. So much so that one of Siad Barre's first moves was to kick all members of the peace corps out of Somalia for spreading degeneracy

Muslim student organizations, who's membership were mainly Khat chewing sufis, like Al Waxdah were at the forefront of the movement against the peace corps as well as the movement to reinstute Islamic dress codes including the Hijab and Niqab. The reason why Somalia moved away from the loose clothing of the 70s and 60s was because of backlash from traditional Somali society mostly made up of Sufis and Ikhwanis not "wahabism" or "arab culture".

Somalis as a whole have always been conservative. I genuinely think if the collapse of the communist government happened peaceful and we went into a free and fair republic, we would still return to the masses of women wear hijab.

As a person who has sufi relatives, I have never viewed them as ”liberals”. These guys are conservative to the core.

The western style dresscodes was due to strong government that was the kacaan. They instituted it and even then, only handful of somali women wore western dresses.

Videos that show regular women in 1970-80s Muqdisho show that they were dressed in regular traditional somali attire. While not as modest as todays somali womens attire, it was far far away from western inmodest clothing.

Secular somalis want to falsify history and claim sufis as ”moderate muslims” (code for liberal). The reason they do this is to gain power and influence or profit. By attaching themselves to sufis, they want to have legitimacy. Simple as that.

Never understood the argument of people covering up they can't explain it logically, the only argument they give is for women modesty or protection from who tho? Muslim men lol so your rapists? never understood how covering up doesn't just mean your God made a mistake lol.

Lots of contradictions to Muslim preaching today. I don't think it's real Islam anyways but Colonial Islam which colonials wanted to replace what happened in dark age Europe onto them. Anything that contradicts your brain isn't from God period no ifs or buts or ahhhs.

You know what I find crazy, these people were just being exported around the world and in this case somalia for one job and one job only. Spreading degeneracy, college level liberal values and american influences.

Besides covering your hair for women was for uncircumcised women from Arabia, Jewish women as only their males are circumized but their women not mandatory due to god not seeing their women as holy. That's why Moses married an Ethiopian woman and Solomon married Sheba.

This isn't the case in Africa where both men and women are circumized which is double grade holiness compared to their half circumized population but they forced and exported their cultural shame so we can share with them their burden so ppl don't abuse their women as garbage. Plus the sons of gentile European, Indians, Mongolians weren't even seen as humans but gentiles due to men n women being both uncircumized by the old world.

There never was masses of Somali women not wearing the hijab (the shalmad, not the long hijabs and niqab we commonly see nowadays) in the first place, even during Barre’s regime. It was only the political/social elite in Muqdisho that adopted Western clothing.
