How to ask this question

So asking where a person's ancestors are from is crazy.

The question is "Where are you from? " This question is crazy cause some people are weirdly offended when someone asks where they are from? they say that they are from America when their parents immigrated from somalia.

some people prefer "what's your ethnicity" but how they answer is wrong. They'll be saying "I'm Sudanese I'm Nigerian Im Indian" that's not an ethnicity. Are you stupid. That's a nationality. That can't be your ethnicity. They can answer as Nubian, Yoruba, Tamil but not a nationality. So this question is confusing. Thoughts.

I think that’s interesting, because if you were asked your ethnicity what is it? If Sudanese, Nigerian or Indian etc is just a nationality as you said and NOT an ethnicity, then I’m curious...what’s the Somali equivalent of ethnicity? What’s your ethnicity...?

A tribe is not ethnicity of its own....it’s a subcomponent within an ethincity group. A nationality refers to the country you hold citizenship. Hence for example you can be nationally Malaysian but ethnically Chinese or Indian. I don’t understand how this isn’t self explanatory.

we don't have to deal with this. Our ethnicity is Somali. Ethnic Somalis are 1 point clans. Non ethnic somalis are benadiris, Barwanis, Somali-Bantu etc. These groups are Somali nationals so Somali by nationality but not ethnicity. so ethnic somalis nationality is Somali and our ethnicity is also Somali.

Tribes are ethnicities. Thats why different tribes speak different languages and have different traditions. They were just put together in the same countries by the colonizers

Somali is an ethnicity. Countries like Sudan Nigeria and India all have different ethnicities within them.

I would get offended, since I consider myself American before Somali. As far as I’m concerned Somalia is just the lawless nation where my ancestors (my parents) immigrated from. It has nothing to do with me now.
