Indonesia and Malaysia

They have a combined population of 300 million Muslims and a combined economy worth $6 trillion. They import roughly $50 billion worth of agricultural products and animal derived goods such as milk and yoghurt annually.

50% of Australia’s livestock industry depends on Indonesia alone, and the latter’s appetite is only growing bigger. Imagine meat processing plants across Somalia tapping into these massive markets, alongside factories manufacturing yoghurt, bottled milk, butter, cheese and other sought after items? The profits would be ridiculous if they eventually pivoted to the rest of Asia.

Is it a lack of creativity that has Somali entrepreneurs focused on residential projects, and not factories and does the World map in Villa Somalia not have Asia on there at all? There is zero engagement with potential major allies like Malaysia and Indonesia.

I've always said that Indonesia and Malaysia is what Somalia should strive to be like. Strong Muslim countries with a solid identity.

A lot of their economy is basic textile factory work 2 dollar a day nonsense I’m not on board with that. They can afford that they have the population we don’t.

Our best bet to grow economy is most likely exploiting the rest of Africa, we have bases set up in multiple countries we need to make sure that money is circulating in Somalia too. Ethiopia Uganda Kenya 230 million. Tanzania Sudan aren’t far away either, and there’s landlocked countries such as South Sudan Rwanda Burundi (40m) which we can sort out port access with.

I looked at their potential as consumers of Somali finished products, which other countries in Africa will reject with their protectionist policies. Indonesia and Malaysia are two vast and neutral markets, with no ill-will or hidden designs towards Somalia or the Somali people. Their combined economy is almost as large as that of the whole of Africa too, which consists of 54 countries! An extra $1 billion to $5 billion in exports to those countries is achievable in the short to medium term if the FGS was proactive.

Also Malaysia is definitely a country we should look up to, considering they are one of the richest Muslim countries without the help of oil or gas.

I agree. The only people who trade with us are dhegacas and they exploit us because we don’t have any other options. Malaysia we already have education links we should look to expand that you’re right.

I agree factories and manufacturing are never a thought for Somalis
First thing first, we need energy to produce anything. Nuclear power plants is not possible for us and even fuel combustion and steam boilers is long shot as it requires significant human capital. I have a family member in galkacyo who pays 70 dollars for electricity and he only has a TV and Fridge. What you think the cost will be when we need thousands of KWs to start a manufacturing company.?

Somalia has lots of potential with solar and wind power. There is also of course the large amounts of oil that Somalia is suspected to have

I always dream that Somalia would be like Singapore/Oman if our government had some ambition to set such countries as a goal that the country should reach, unfortunately their vision is very short-sighted
