28 tweets on this with relevant sources mostly from cia declassified documents. Very good, fully accurate aswell I recommend everyone reads through it, its a good refresher but he kinda missed out on how they sweeped through the ogaden until the Harar area.

Barre was not exagerating when he was talking about the advanced weapons Ethiopans were being supplied with by USSR-Cuba, after all.

Bookmarked/Archived, will come back to this, thanks.

I read the thread and its actually crazy how much the soviets and cubans bailed them out the ethiopians were truly saved by the soviets/cuba alone if they didnt come we would have been marching into addis.

It also against the claims of Siad being driven by emotions when going to the war. His early policy of arming Somalis in the region and even trying to get them to launch the initial assault goes against such a view.

another interesting point-the wslf regained 80 percent of the countryside within a year. It shows Somali galbeed people could have freed themselves if there was a stronger and more united movement. In fact it could have happened in the early 90s.

CIA report also says Somali could have put Kenya in a qabri as well. Wallahi if werenโ€™t so incompetent and resource ridden Horn of Africa/yemen could have been our playground.

Last point-Netanyahu boys are heavily invested (behind the scenes) in maintaining kiftopiya and balkanising somaliya.

What an informative thread. The one thing that stood out to me the most was how much of the support for Ethiopia, by Isreal, Cuba and Soviet had to do with religious ideology and aligning with them simply because they were Christian. Soviet-Cuba you had the involvement of the Vatican order

And with Isreal:

Wish we had internal Somali intelligence documents from NSS to get the Somali perspective on how things played.

He actually attempted to negotiate with Ethiopia: It goes against this whole notion that he was some suicidal war monger
Siad Barre opts to negotiate on the Western Somali region ( Ogaden ) In the early years of the military government, Siad wanted to focus on the domestic affairs of the nation, upon the Derg revolution in 1974 Siad Barre wanted to open negotiations on the western Somali region however Marxist Ethiopia was in no mood to negotiate on the table. The Ogaden war was a last resort measure , he was not keen on going to war with Ethiopia but they left him with no choice.

He like you said was trying to support the WSLF in the beginning and supply them with the means and have them liberate themselves, without Somalia's direct involvement.

I'd like to bring this thread back again but @Idilinaa do you think its possible that the Unitef States and Saudi Arabia paid and supported Barre to invade Ethiopia in the first place? America defintely didn't want the Red Sea to be in complete Soviet control and Barre was quick in taking American support after the war as well.

Somalia was not aligned with the United States when they invaded Ethiopia. They also didn't get any military support from them during the war.

So No.
