Eritrea is the biggest enemy of Somalis wanting Somalia never to leave its warlord or terrorist status @EritreanPost_ which is a shame knowing siyad barre hosted, trained the TPLF in Mogadishu, the Ethiopian especially tigrays of ethio and Eritrea should of showed gratitude. Meles did tho to save Somalia from two options terrorism or warlords which was the situation in 2006. The Mogadishu u see today and its revival.is due to that intervention or else it could've easily become a warlord or terrorist capital.

Those hawiyes really harmed Somalinimo with what they did in Mogadishu.

U been ankle biting constantly my views. ICU were no different to Taliban and Iran Ayatollah, the little order they provided in Mogadishu was so they can become the Islamic terror capital and host all foreign terrorists in the world which would've made Mogadishu not only a sanctioned city like Iran but a terrorist capital where it would serve as a base for all terror. This undeniable.

Running around with petty aks and petty ieds won't make u a world power, ur using shit they sell.off as used products in the black market while their.keeping weapons that can counter it in their arsenal, your always a fuckin puppet.

ICU was created also with hawiye in it when did Islam become Hawiye, they looted Islamic religion after looting Somalis in 91. Tribal Islam like wtf is wrong with u? No Islamic state can ever exist if it doesn't unify all Muslims including shias like the 4 rashidun caliphate, the rest are khawarij.

Eritrea was allied with every anti imperialist Somali government. Eritrea wanted to prevent the ousting of Barre by reconciliing between Kacaan USC and SNM. But guess what Ethiopia and America had other plans

This is a nice break-down of the ICU, as much as I would agree with you on some key areas @DR OSMAN, the ICU had moderates who kept the radical factions in check, when this broke down, and the Ethiopian invasion with the blessing of the United States, it lead Al Kebab to be born and gave it justification for the masses who joined it, you can't root out an ideology that is rooted in religious zealously.

ICU was the internal answer to issues stemming in the South with the failure of the government, America and the West feared this.

The Islamic Courts Union (ICU) was a coalition of Sharia-based courts that emerged as a powerful political and military force in Somalia in the early 2000s. The group became prominent for its attempt to bring law and order to Somalia, a country that had been without a central government since the fall of President Siad Barre in 1991. Here's an overview of the ICU's history, rise to power, and eventual downfall:

Origins and Background:

  • Somali Civil War: Following the collapse of Siad Barre's regime in 1991, Somalia descended into chaos, with warlords controlling different regions. In the absence of a functioning central government, ordinary Somalis faced insecurity, lawlessness, and frequent violence.
  • Islamic Courts: To restore some form of order, various communities in Mogadishu (Somalia's capital) and other parts of the country set up local Islamic courts that enforced Sharia law. These courts were community-based and aimed to provide security and resolve disputes.

Rise of the Islamic Courts Union (ICU):

  • Formation: In 2004-2006, several Islamic courts united under the umbrella of the Islamic Courts Union. The ICU was supported by various clans, religious scholars, business leaders, and militias. They gained popular support due to their ability to provide security and justice, something the warlords had failed to do.
  • Military Success: By mid-2006, the ICU had successfully pushed warlords out of Mogadishu, gaining control over much of southern Somalia, including the capital. The ICU imposed law and order in areas they controlled, establishing a semblance of stability.
  • Popular Support: Many Somalis welcomed the ICU, as they restored order and provided basic services, including functioning courts, policing, and some form of governance. This was a stark contrast to the years of warlord-dominated anarchy.

Leadership and Ideology:

  • Moderate vs. Radical Factions: The ICU was not monolithic; it included both moderate and radical elements. While some leaders advocated for a broad-based Islamic governance system, others were more aligned with hardline Islamist ideologies, including ties to militant groups like Al-Shabaab.
  • Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed: He was one of the key moderate leaders of the ICU and served as its chairman. After the ICU's fall, he would later become the president of Somalia.
  • Hardline Elements: Figures like Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys were considered more radical. Aweys had previously been involved with Al-Itihaad al-Islamiya, a militant Islamist group.

Conflict with Ethiopia:

  • Transitional Federal Government (TFG): While the ICU was consolidating power, the internationally-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) was established in 2004, but it was weak and had little control over the country. The TFG was based in Baidoa and was supported by Ethiopia, the U.S., and other Western powers.
  • ICU Expansion: The ICU's rapid expansion and their calls for jihad against Ethiopia (which was seen as a foreign Christian power) alarmed neighboring countries and the international community. Ethiopia feared the ICU would support separatist movements within its borders and become a haven for extremist groups.
  • Ethiopian Intervention: In late 2006, Ethiopia, with U.S. support, intervened militarily in Somalia. Ethiopian forces, along with TFG troops, quickly defeated the ICU, driving them out of Mogadishu by early 2007.

Fall of the ICU and Aftermath:

  • Collapse: The ICU disintegrated in the face of the Ethiopian military, but its defeat was far from the end of Islamist influence in Somalia. While moderate leaders like Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed entered politics and eventually joined the TFG, hardline factions like Al-Shabaab went underground.
  • Al-Shabaab Emergence: Al-Shabaab, originally the militant wing of the ICU, became the dominant insurgent force following the ICU's fall. Al-Shabaab rejected the TFG and Ethiopian occupation, waging a brutal insurgency and eventually declaring allegiance to al-Qaeda.
  • Sheikh Sharif as President: In 2009, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed became the president of Somalia as part of the Djibouti Agreement, a peace process that integrated moderate elements of the ICU into the TFG. His leadership was seen as an attempt to reconcile Islamist forces with the transitional government.

Legacy of the ICU:

  • Impact on Somalia: The ICU’s brief rule showed that a cohesive force could restore some degree of stability in Somalia. However, their downfall also led to the rise of Al-Shabaab, which remains one of the most dangerous militant groups in East Africa.
  • Moderate Islamist Influence: The legacy of moderate ICU leaders like Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is still felt in Somali politics. Islamist parties continue to play a role in Somalia’s complex political landscape.

Conclusion:

The ICU was a pivotal force in Somali history, representing both the hope for stability and the threat of extremism. Its rise to power was a reflection of the deep frustrations with warlords and lawlessness, while its downfall underscored the fragility of any centralized authority in Somalia’s highly fractured political landscape. The ICU's radical offshoot, Al-Shabaab, continues to shape the region's security challenges to this day.

Leadership and Ideology:

Conflict with Ethiopia:

Walal, it was western and Ethiopian propaganda, claiming ICU was Al Shabab, when they both were rival fractions and had opposing

the ICU is the Islamic courts union. They are the daughter party of the United Somalia court/congress.

The ICU was legitimate was force in Mogadishu in 2006. They didn’t declare Jihad on any religion, nor did they attack America or Ethiopia but they united Somalia based of Islam.

The ICU is not bad or worse as the USC who was back then backed by Ethiopia.

so Ethiopias propaganda in declare icu as terrorists while they backed usc didn’t make any sense.

In 2007 the Allince of the Re-Liberation of Somalia was formed in Asmara, Eritrea joining former ICU fighters and Somali Nationalist who opposed Ethiopias occupation of Somalia.

only Ethiopia is to blamed for the creation of Al Shabab, because they toppling and dismantling of the ICU led to the split, which caused the creation of the Asmara based Alliance of the Reliberation of Somalia and rival fraction of the ICU/Alliance Al Shabab led by Mukthar Rubo, he opposed the Eritrea backed Alliance of Reliberation of Somalia and accused them of beeing too moderate and secular
