To marry the wife of their deceased brother.

This occurred in my family.

My grandfather had an older brother who died in the 60s in a flood along with 5 sons of his. AUN to all of them. His wife and only daughter were the ones who survived.

His wife then remarried, this time to my grandfathers other brother, which is also the younger brother of her late husband.

They ended up having a son, making the daughter from the previous marriage and son of this new marriage direct Ilmo Adeer while simultaneously being maternal siblings.

Yes, we even have a name for it: dumal.

Men also marrying their deceased wife's sister is also rather common as well. I've seen that with the older generation as well.

Great tradition, in the West when children get abused, it's by the Mama's boyfriend or new husband. There are also Stepmothers that don't treat a child right.

A child's uncle or auntie is more likely to do the right thing and already have pre-existing love.

Common maybe 50 years ago but it was also common then if a mans wife died then he would get given her single younger sister.

It doesnt work like that now but maybe in baadiiyo.

Yes it’s called dumaal. When my maternal grandmother died my grandfather married her younger sister (my mother was 4 years old) . My mother and her 6 sibling were raised by this habaryar and she had 3 children with my grandfather . My mother called her hooyo and always looked at her as her mother .

The first time I found out about it I thought it was weird but it makes sense now because children are better off being raised by their aunt or uncle. A stranger might not treat the children well .
