Is Xawaash seasoning somali originally or is it Yemeni?

I've always known Xawaash the seasoning mix to be a somali thing but recently I found out that Yemenis have an almost identical spice mix called Hawa'ij. I'm curious as to whether we adopted it from them or not. What do y'all think?

It’s somali. Just because we share some things with other ethnic groups does not mean that it’s not ours. there’s hundreds of things that are shared within many different groups and it seems like we are the only ones who want to give credit to the other group, as if we were animals that didn’t eat, that didn’t have clothes, that didn’t have anything that other humans all have their variations of. Other people get inspired by us too so please stop this behavior.

He was the realest, I was the baddest 💋
It’s Yemeni or at least it was them who introduced this spice blend to us. This isn’t surprising since modern Somali cuisine is heavily (maybe entirely?) influenced by outside cultures, even the word ‘Xawaash’ derives from an Arabic word (Hawaij).

Wallahi chill, you're making it way deeper than it actually is. I was just curious. People like you are the perfect example of what I call chronically online.

Damn guess we also need to stop using salt then with that logic :whoo:
It's the way y'all jumping to conclusions, I'm just asking about it's origins, never said we should stop using it, horta is dajiya, read anything 3 times before responding acudubillah

That's not what I asked tho. I know somalis use it but i'm asking if it is somali in origins, y'all are dyslexic asf:yloezpe: lord have mercy

What does me asking about the origins of a spice blend have to do with Yemeni dick riding, read the room.

Acuudubillah what is it with you somalis who question every little thing about our culture and its “origins”.

“Is canjeero somali? Is macwiis somali? Is guntiino Somali? Is dirac somali?” Next thing you will ask if the oxygen we breathe is imported from somewhere.

Xawash is the mystery spice. No one knows what Xawash is. Each Somali household has a different interpretation of Xawash. I go with the majority opinion: Xawash is cumin, not a blend of different spices.

If any of you have noticed, Somali food at restaurants doesn't taste the same the following week. I think it's because of the different workers who have a different understanding what Xawash is. I had enough of their inconsistency of the taste of their food in the summer at one restaurant and read them the riot act. Balayada xuun. Somali restaurant chefs are on the top of the naughty Somali list
